Soweto slum youths Living a dream curved from a machete

By Annette Amondi

Deep in the streets of Soweto a group of four young men are slowing scaling the ladder to realize their dream.

The four, Pascal Charo, Cosmas Nzingu, Harrison Mungai and Zacharia Maacharia make up the acrobatic dance group machete.

Machete was founded by Zacharia Macharia who is a former street kid back in 2015.

Macharia used to train his fellow street kids the art of acrobatics but many fell out of his group after realizing they were not making money but instead entertaining passersby for free.

“On the streets there were so many challenges, no food, being chased by police everyday so I decided to occasionally make myself busy through acrobatics because it is something I have loved since childhood.” Aid Macharia

Macharia soon took up odd jobs and hustled his way out of the streets renting a small space in Kibera’s Soweto area.

Soon he made friends with Cosmas who introduced him to the other three giving rise to machete acrobats as they have come to be known.

The group say the biggest event they have ever featured in was a performance at Sunflower school Kiamaiko.

They have also featured in Maji Maji and Kobole’s upcoming video which will drop on 1st of September.

“We are really excited about this video and hopeful that it will help us realize part of our dream to grow. Machete wants to rise and hopefully this is the beginning of our journey.” Added Macharia

Speaking to Ghetto Radio the group says their talent has helped them stay away from crime as all their time is taken up with practice.

“The youth need to realize their talents and stay commit ed to it because it will bring them blessing. Hard work is also key to growth.” Says  Harrison Mungai

Machete hopes to one day open ‘Machete Talent Academy’ to help young guys realize their dreams.

Machete has struggled to scale their ladder saying one of their biggest challenge has always been uniforms which has cost them so many gigs.

Lower Savanna MCA Nicholas Okumu among other well wishers have pledged to buy them uniforms and instruments.

One can reach them through the mobile number 0704874914.

Kenyan boy band Sauti Sol and Nyashinski are back with another hit this time asking Kenyans to take a good look at their actions.

The singers combined their prowess to address different issues affecting Kenyans on a daily basis.

In the song ‘Tujiangalie’ the group addresses social, economic and political aspects from an ordinary Kenyan’s point of view.

“Our latest release is about self-reflection. Understanding that our frustrations with society can be tackled by us, as a generation, looking inward and holding ourselves accountable for the role we play. None of us are perfect, none of us are exonerated. Change begins when we all decide to act towards building a world we are proud to live in.” #Tujiangalie ft @realshinski Out now!” said Sauti Sol.

The song also calls on Kenyan youth to hustle for themselves when they are still young instead of bickering on social media.

“Tujiangalie tuko pabaya leo kuliko jana sikio la kufa halisikii dawa tuko kwa twitter tunajibizana, tujiangalie tuko pabaya leo kuliko jana tusipoziba ufa tutajenga kuta, tusake zetu tungali vijana,” goes part of the lyrics

“Every artiste is buying Youtube views” Vicmass LuoDollar

Luo rapper Vic Mas Luodollar has addressed the rising issue regarding artistes buying YouTube views for their songs.

According to Vicmass buying views is a normal vise both locally and internationally.

This comes amid controversy over Octo’s latest release, Oliel, which garnered over 1 million views in one day, despite Octo having only 66,000 subscribers

“If buying views will put food on his table, then I don’t have a problem with that. Every artiste is buying views, from Nicki Minaj to Jay Z and the rest. It is not new to us. There is a lot people  doing it out here, so let us focus on our circle and leave the rest to the people who are concerned, Nikiona mtu amevaa nguo, sitaki kujua kama ameomba ama ni yake.” He said

He went on saying he wouldn’t care about another artiste’s views but would only focus on his own.

“The same way, if I see someone with a million views per day, I don’t want to know if they bought [them] because those people who are not in the country will not know if they are bought or not,” he added

The artiste however maintains that he wouldn’t buy views because it took him ten years to build his brand. He also added that he doesn’t care if Octo bought the views or not because he has good content.

“I wouldn’t buy views and that is why it took me 10 years to build my brand and there is no one who doesn’t know I can deliver and that is what will sell my music. It is my work to build myself from the mistakes I make rather than lying to myself that I am dope while I am not. I will never buy views. Octopizzo is my mentor and if he will buy views for his videos I would be happy because has good visuals and audio. No one can compete his work.” He said

About two months after the arrival of his son, gospel singer Daddy Owen has finally opened up about the challenges he faced during his baby’s delivery.

The singer says his son was born five weeks early after a scan showed that his wife needed to go for an emergency delivery.

He says his wife had been complaining of labor-like pain despite the fact that her due date was not almost.

“The biggest challenge was after the last check with the doctor, just before booking the hospital for delivery. The doctor told us to go for a scan because my wife said she was in pain, yaani kama labour pain, yet her due date was not near. We went for the scan and the results showed that the cord was around the baby’s neck…’’ he said

Owen says he was so stressed about the whole condition but decided to rush his wife to the hospital for the emergency delivery.

“The doctor said for a very long time he has had such cases, and those kids ended up dying. I was so stressed about losing my son. I decided to ask the doctor what the reason could be, and he said there is no documented reason,” he added
