Kenyan Gengetone artists have teamed up to call for respect from Kenyan event promoters.

This comes after the artists who were to headline the Gengetone Festival in Machakos had friction with the organizers over payment.

In a series of posts shared online, the artists are now saying they will not accept to grace any event without prior full payment.

This is because a number of promoters convince artists to perform before full payment only to end up disappointing them afterwards.

Gengetone group Sailors now say they will not perform in any gig that pays them less than 350K.

“Kenyan promoters you have to respect gengetone and new wave artists!!!No money no show! Kwanza bila 350,000 ata usiote kutuita show na hio ni post covid offer. Gengetone fest was a major disappointment but any tupatane mbele….#dabongestyletotheworld” they wrote on social media

Boondocks member Exray also revealed that he refused to perform at the Saturday gig because he could not understand how the organizers paid for everything but refused to pay artists.

“ABOUT YESTERDAY 😤😤😤Atuwezi kuwa tuki hype events.. ma fans wanakuwa disappointed. . How the hell can you pay your sound, venue and stage and you can’t afford to pay the artist!!!.. .. if you can’t manage your work then don’t do it….🤦🤦. silazima u hype jinaa na event… Don’t!!!… Gengetone artist are paying bills tooo … muache kutubeba ivoo😤😤…. your are stealing from our fans and you’re killing the artist too😠#Taniuwamovement” Exray Said

Media personality Willis Raburu had also explained that he urged artists not to perform at the Saturday gig if they had not been paid.
