The 2020 Grammy Awards ceremony opened with a heartfelt tribute to basketball player Kobe Bryant, who died on Sunday.
Pop star Lizzo who kicked off the show with her single ‘Cuz I love You’ dedicated her entire performance to the fallen basketball star saying ‘This is for Kobe”.
Alicia Keys who was this year’s host also paid tribute Bryant by asking the hall full of celebrities to take a moment of silence. She was joined by Boyz II Men who sang an acapella version of their song “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye”
The 62 Nd Grammys Gala night took place at the Staples Center, where Bryant played his entire career with the LA Lakers.
News of the star’s death at the age of 41 stunned artists and performers backstage at the arena when it broke earlier in the day.
Following the news of his death, celebrities shared their condolence messages across social media platforms.
“My heart is so heavy. No one should ever experience what the families involved are going through. This has affected us all so much but I cannot begin to imagine what Vanessa is feeling losing her husband and her baby girl. I cry just thinking about it,” wrote Kim Kardashian
Cleveland Cavaliers player Tristan Thompson also mourned the loss on Sunday.
“I’m at a loss for words. I can’t believe this man. RIP Kobe and his daughter Gianna, it was a honor to be able to compete with you. Incredible player, even better person” he wrote
“I’m so sad and stunned right now. In Staples Arena, where Kobe created so many memories for all of us, preparing to pay tribute to another brilliant man we lost too soon, Nipsey Hussle. Life can be so brutal and senseless sometimes. Hold on to your loved ones. We miss you, Kobe” wrote John Legend
