Ever found yourself rocking to a certain deejay Shinski while in a Kenyan matatu?
Many Kenyans don’t know the identity of the deejays they are forced to listen to while seated in traffic, but one thing for sure is many of them acknowledge those who do the good work.
One such deejay is Steve Nyaosi popularly known as deejay Shinski.
Shinski has become a popular name in the Kenyan matatu mixes but suprisngly he does not even reside in the country.
Untill last week, shinski had no clue he is a big name in Nairobi with his mixes being played in matatus plying Umoja, Githurai, Kikuyu- kinoo routes and maybe even more routes.
Born and raised in Kenya, Shinski moved to the USA after high school where he’s been residing for a couple of years.
The engineer cum deejay says he longs for a day when deejaying will not be conciderd a hobby but a serious profession.
With some of the greatest collections, Shinski has managed to bag the best African deejay title at the mashujaa award along with nominations for this year’s AFRIMMA awards.
So what does he say about the Kenyan entertainment scene. “Kenya has really grown in terms of entertainment. People are more open to ideas, every day there is a gig that gives deejays an opportunity meaning we are somehow learning to accept deejaying but we still have a long way to go. The society needs to learn to accept deejaying as a profession and not as a hobby.” He said
The deejay also expressed his interest to one day work with Sauti sol, Naiboi and Arrow Boy.
Parting shot: “I’m proud of the Kenyan industry we are taking over the world. I’d really wish the youth too can learn to use the opportunities brought by social media so that we all grow ourselves through talent.”
