To what extent can unemployment push someone? Have you heard of a case where someone is over qualified for a job they have applied for?
Boaz Onyango is a graduate in Bachelor of science, Chemisty but because of the rate of unemployment he has found himself doing odd jobs deviating from his long term passion.
He studied at Makongeni primary school then went on to study at Pumwani secondary school where he cleared his high school education.
In 1998 Boaz joined university of Nairobi with the hope that he would land a lucrative job at the end of his studies.
Upon graduation however he got a job at Kenya Airways handling customer service but the job did not last long as his contract ended.
He went on to hustle on his own before joining a micro finance corporation which also did not last forcing him to go back to job seeking
“The most tiring thing is to apply for jobs whose requirements you qualify for but then you get no response.” He said
Onyango narrates how at one point he went for an interview at Toyota Kenya and was over confident he would get the job only to get an email later apologizing to him and telling he is over qualified for the job.
Beat by life’s constant setbacks he joined a friend who had enlisted for a security guard job just to try and make ends meet.
He worked as a security guard in secret for sometimes.
“For two months my wife never knew I work as a security guard. I lived like Papa Shiorandula (TV character). All she knew is I work in Westlands.”he added
Onyango is also qualified in communication, sales and marketing and hopes that soon his doors will open and things will change.
He advises the youth to concentrate on the studies because it is not about the jobs but because studies help.
