A section of deejays and entertainers have revealed the ordeal most of them pass through over the weekend when they are out entertaining revelers in club.
The recent spike in Deejay arrests has caused an online uproar with many entertainers calling on the county government to intervene.
‘’THIS NEEDS TO STOP!!! Every weekend, DJ’s from all over NAIROBI are arrested while trying to make a living and put food on their tables the way they best know how and for the next hour, they were driven around in the back of a city council pickup like Thugs and hooligans to various other pubs arresting other Djs.’’ One Dj Bonez wrote
The deejays claim they are being arrested under the guise of noise pollution then harassed to pay hefty bribes failure to which they spend the rest of the weekend in holding cells.
‘’The team arresting operates under NEMA, (a claim which NEMA officials heavily deny) and that they were making arrests for sound pollution in the clubs. However, they leave the club owners and arrest the vulnerable young DJs. The DJs are then blackmailed and extorted for amounts ranging between 30k-200k, failure to which, they will end up sleeping in a cold hard cell for a few days with nothing booked in the OB. The good club owners will help get you out. The bad ones will switch off their phones. The operation is always led by the same individual who goes by the name, Mbaya. We are now appealing to @sonko @sakaja @ (everyone else) to help this resolve this situation by sitting with our representative.’’ Bonez’s post continued
Many celebrities among them Chris Darlin and Sauti Sol have teamed up under the hash tag stop arresting deejays to call on the county government’s help in stopping the ilegal arrests.
’Urging all artists and fans alike to help speak up against the recent wave of DJ arrests. #StopArrestingtheDJs.’’ Wrote sauti sol.
Last night Kris Darlin, Creme del a creme and other deejays went to central police station to make sure two deejays who were arrested on Friday night from the Alchemist club in Westlands had been released.
Deejays Riggz and Tremor were released after Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja posted their bail.
